People may inhale and ingest these toxic spores. Fortunately, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, few case reports show that toxic molds inside homes can cause unique or rare health conditions such as pulmonary hemorrhage or memory loss. A causal link between the presence of a toxic mold and these conditions has not been proven, the agency says.
Mold can become a problem overnight. Research shows that toxic mold can germinate in 24 to 48 hours after a flood. If you have a mold problem, the cleanup has to be painstaking. If the problem is serious, you’ll have to hire a professional, typically a firm with experience cleaning up after disasters such as floods and fires.
The sources of the mold have to be located, the areas have to be contained, and material removed under controlled circumstances. Then the areas must be vacuumed, washed, and vacuumed again. Drywall is porous, and if there’s mold, it is all over the place.
Hard furniture such as tables can be cleaned, but soft furniture such as couches has to be gotten rid of. Air tests must be taken before the job begins and after it is finished.
The basement is typically a site for mold growth. If the mold is extensive, it might require you to rip out everything down to the joists and studs and power wash the mold from the floors and walls. Then the surfaces have to be covered with several coats of water-proofing.
